With Swords: A brief look into the honours of C.G.E Mannerheim

2019.04.29 02:38 MTammela With Swords: A brief look into the honours of C.G.E Mannerheim

A brief look into the awards, medals, orders and honours of the most decorated Finn in history, Marshall of Finland Carl Gustaf Emil Mannerheim. This website is basically a virtual tour into the Mannerheim museum in Helsinki and a look into the fascinating personal history of Marshall Mannerheim. I’ve singled out the page that shows the medals and orders preserved in the museum and I have done a translation of the text shown under the pictures, in some cases I have also added some interesting tidbits and factoids when I felt it proper. Also I have translated (to the best of my ability) the names of the orders and medals (apologies in advance for any possible mistakes). The website is in Finnish but if you wish, you can look through the links, there are some quite interesting pictures and if you want I can translate specific pages. So firstly here is the link to the page in question:Mannerheim-Kunniamerkit I have linked all the pictures below, but if you want to look at the links at the bottom of the website…well…there they are. Now, following the links, in italics will be the translation and in parentheses, are the tidbits etc. Hope you find this interesting.
Showcase 1
  1. Vapaudenristin Suurristi miekkojen kera Grand Cross of the Order of the Cross of Liberty with swords; Awarded April 30th 1918 after the Battle of Vyborg. (Note the colouring of the ribbon, in 1940 it was decided that all grades of the Crosses of Liberty would be awarded in red and white for merit under enemy fire and with yellow and red with or without swords depending on the specifics for merit “in the home front”)
  2. Vapaudenristin Suurristi miekkojen ja jalokivien kera Grand Cross of the Order of the Cross of Liberty with swords and jewels; Awarded March 20th 1940 in recognition of leading our defence during the Winter War. (Only awarded twice, to Emperor Wilhelm II of Germany in 1918 and to Mannerheim on March 20th 1940. Note the colour change)
  3. Vapaudenristin 1. luokan Mannerheim-risti (No:1) Mannerheim Cross 1st Class of the of the Order of the Cross of Liberty No:1; Awarded October 7th 1941 after President Risto Ryti together with, at the time 17 appointed knights of the Mannerheim Cross, had proposed that the Marshall be presented with the Mannerheim Crosses 1st and 2nd class of the Cross of Liberty. Mannerheim Cross 1st Class was awarded besides Mannerheim only to General Erik Heinrichs.
  4. Vapaudenristin 2. luokan Mannerheim-risti (No:18) Mannerheim Cross 2nd Class of the of the Order of the Cross of Liberty No:18; Awarded October 7th 1941 (Pictured here is the “repetition clasp” of the Mannerheim Cross. It is in the shape of crossed marshals batons and was worn above the cross. Although nominally being the “2nd Class” Mannerheim Cross, this was the de facto award known as, the Mannerheim Cross, since only two of the 1st Class crosses were ever awarded)
  5. Vapaudenristin 1. luokka miekkojen kera Cross of Liberty, 1st Class with swords; Awarded April 6th 1918 after the Battle of Tampere “for brilliant military manoeuvres”

(Although here it is stated that it was awarded for “leading the defence”, other sources state that this was a special honour for an officer who had received all other awards and order befitting his rank. I personally don’t know which is true.)
  7. Vapaudenristin 4. luokka miekkojen kera Cross of Liberty, 4th Class with swords; Awarded April 6th 1918 for “personal bravery” during the Battle of Tampere. (The colour of the ribbon during this time 1918-c.1940, was determined by the class not merit i.e. under enemy fire or civilian service)

  2. Suomen Valkoisen Ruusun Suurristi Ketjuineen Grand Cross of the White Rose of Finland with Collar; Awarded May 13th 1919. (Obviously an error, since this is the “regular” Grand Cross without the collar, identical to the previous picture)
  3. Suomen Leijonan Suurristi Miekkojen Kera Grand Cross of the Order of the Lion of Finland wit Swords; Awarded August 4th 1944. (Awarded 12 times and the only Finnish Grand Cross not awarded with jewels to Mannerheim, go figure)
Showcase 3
  1. Suojeluskuntajärjestön kultainen ansioristi solkien kera "Vapaussota" The Golden Merit Cross of the Civil Guard with clasp ”Liberty War” (Liberty war is the direct translation of Vapaussota, one of the several names for our civil war, this particular name was favoured by the Whites, the winning side, but nowadays we usually refer to it as simply ”sisällissota” or well…Civil war, bit boring but there you are. This Variant was awarded only once although 4 other were awarded without the clasp.)
  2. Tampereen valtauksen kultainen muistomitali ruusukenauhassa The Golden Commemorative Medal of the Battle of Tampere on Rosette Ribbon; Awarded 1918 (I don’t know why this medal is constantly being quoted as “awarded in 1918”, since the earliest medals were made and awarded in 1920, perhaps the awarding was done retroactively, but nevertheless this is another one off for the Marshall, see a pattern forming?)
  3. Vapaudenristin 2. luokan ansiomitali Order of the Cross of Liberty Medal for Merit, 2nd Class; Awarded 1942
  4. Vapaussodan muistomitali solkien kera Commemorative Medal of the Liberty War with clasps; Awarded 1918 (These commemorative medals were the first medals of the independent Finland, this particular medal has two clasp “Tampere” and “Viipuri” referring to battles fought in Tampere and Viipuri or Vyborg.)
